The wedding were not celebrated the way they are
now. The weddings were held only in the morning. The party was held
at the brides' house. Infact they used to rent chairs from a church
and the house was nicely prepared for the occasion. After the knot
of the rings at the church all guests used to go to the brides house
and take the gifts with them.
The party starts with a cup of cocao and after they
continue with almond biscuits and fruit cake, sugar coated almonds,
cakes and sponges, liquers of different colours like creme de mente
(green colour), mulberries liquer (red colour), sweet wine, brandy
and whiskey for the men. Eventually they used to present even ice
To make a joyful atmosphere they used to hire a band
with probably 3 violins and a double bass.
Just before the couple used to leave for their
honeymoon they guests used to throw at them handfuls of rice so
as to have many children. The rice used to represent fertility and
best wishes in their coming years together.
